The meaning of the word Mandla in Sanskrit is Circle. Mandla is a spiritual and ritual symbol in Hinduism and Buddhism, representing the universe. The circular design symbolizes the idea that life is never ending and everything is connected. It represents the notion of totality, wholeness, original perfection, the self, the infinite, eternity, timelessness, all cyclic movement, God because god is a circle whose centre is everywhere and whose circumference is nowhere. The Mandla also represents spiritual journey within the individual viewer. Mandlas were created in the service of one of the world's great religion, Hinduism and Buddhism. They were produced in Tibet, India, China, Japan, Indonesia etc. and date from the 4th century to present. Now they are created throughout the world including New York city.
