Tanjore or Thanjavur painting is a classical South Indian painting. The most unique feature of Tanjore paining is its 3D property. The painting is done mainly on Indian Gods and Goddesses like Krishna, Ganesh , Balaji, Satya Narayan, Laxmi , Saraswati, Maa Durga nd many more. Materials used in it are canvas, fine chalk powder, marble powder, paint and 22 carat gold foil. It has ‘emboss’ on it. The painting has areas that are elevated from the surface. The painting has many processes. Embossing is one of them .The figures in Thanjavur paintings are housed in the centre of the board. The Thanjavur paintings were first introduced by the Chola Dynasty in the 16th Century. There are many stories found in the history of this painting. Nayak rulers of the south encouraged the art. But it gained prominence under the royal patronage of Thanjavur’s Sarabhoji II (1797-1833) and Shivaji II (1833-58).
