Tradition of Polish faience. Faience is a kind of pottery. It is burnt in temperature above 1000 degrees centigrade and then it becomes white or beige. Faience is made all over the world, but it also plays an essential role in Polish folk art. There were many faience factories in Poland in the past. Now, some of them still produce this kind of applied art. The nearest museum of faience to Inowrocław (the town where I live) is in the city of Włocławek. There used to be a factory of faience in 1873. Plates, mugs, bowls were made there and they were decorated with a flower motif in different colours. Many beautiful and unique patterns were created. The most popular colours in Włocławek’s faience factory were cobalt, brown and purple. Unfortunately, because of the economical crisis, the factory in the city stopped working after almost 120 years. Fortunately, memories remain and thanks to museums we remember and appreciate faience, which used to be so popular in Poland. In the pictures you can see my way of painting it. I didn't use pottery, but a paper plate and I painted a cobalt pattern - typical for Polish faience. Everyone can try it!
